Future options for the project

Hey all,
This is important, though probably not urgent. I'm opening the discussion for us to figure out the options for the future affiliation or organization of the project.

Present: we're an informal association ("legally" - the word overused lately, heh). We have offers for sharing spaces on VPSes for hosting from a few people (thanks Eliana). We use personal and external services for sites/infrastructure needs.

As to what the options are, to list shortly:

organization of our own: informal association
organization of our own: make a non-profit - get "actual" legal status
affiliation with a foundation: i.e. Mozilla, Eclipse, or (the also overused back on another world *cough*) Apache
affiliation with a non-profit organization which supports Open Source projects: spi-inc, SF Conservancy
